Apostle Jelf Downie was born on the 2nd March 1937 in Sandy Bay Mount Pelier, Hanover, Jamaica. He was the youngest of five children. Apostle was brought up in a God fearing home and promised the Lord that if he brought him safely to England he would begin to serve him faithfully. This soon changed as he arrived in England in June 1961 and began to live and enjoy life. He was soon reminded by God of his agreement to give his life to him.

He began working at Turners Manufactory where he met Deacon Albert Nelson, who encouraged him to give his heart to the Lord. Deacon continued to invite him to various church meetings. In April 1971 he was baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and not many days hence received the Gift of the Holy Ghost at Refuge Temple London, Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

In 1974 God showed him that he had a work for him to do, but because of his apparently short time in the faith, he was of a fearful heart and did not take heed to the call. In 1976 he was ordained Deacon. Whilst performing his role as a Deacon the Lord called him again and sent him to preach in the district of Wednesfield, St.Chads Church hall. Many doubted the call of the Lord upon his life and did not believe this to be true. It was said that “the baptism water did not even have time to dry of his back and he wanted to have church” As the Lord had promised to be with him he did not fold under the pressure. Even when he was visiting other churches they would often introduce him asking his congregation to stand which consisted of his family (which consisted of two adults and seven children aged 1-11years of age). God continued to bless the church in Wednesfield as promised, he remained in Wednesfield for 19 years.

In 1987 he was directed again by God to start a Sunday School in Walsall. The church was blessed; Sunday school children came from all over the area. Then in 1990 he began Pastoring in Hulme, Manchester. Four years later at the age of 57 he was ordained as Bishop; God had much work for him to do. God was blessing his ministry from strength to strength.

After many years of pursing a place of worship of their own and in December 1994 General Assembly purchased Mount Olive Apostolic Church, which was originally Little London Baptist Church, Temple Bar, Willenhall, in December 1994. The building had been left, abandoned and much work needed to be carried out before worship could commence there, but Bishop and the congregation were determined to restore the building even though funds were not available, they knew the Lord would provide. In 1995 the church was ready to be dedicated to the Lord.

The Plan of Salvation

Did you know that God created you?

Did you know that you were created by God to have a loving relationship with God? He is patiently and lovingly waiting for you to respond to His invitation to salvation. Yes, you can receive forgiveness for all your sins and assurance of eternal life through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved" (John 3:16-17).

How can I know God?

You may be asking yourself: "How can I know God?" Man is able to know the true and living God through His Word (The Holy Bible). The Scripture reveals God's character, His stance and His plan for all mankind. It is through reading His Word that we are cleansed and come to a knowledge of the righteousness of God and that which He requires of us all.

What is it that prevents us from personally knowing God?

The sin that we inherited from Adam has separated us from God — our corruption is to such a degree that we cannot know Him personally and cannot experience His true love. God's Word says, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Man was created to have fellowship with God, but because of disobedience sin this prevented from that Holy union. Anything less than perfect obedience to all God's commands will cause death "The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). The ultimate result of this death is an eternity in Hell. This spiritual death has forged a separation from God. Man is sinful and God is holy. This creates a gulf unbridgeable by man making that intended fellowship impossible. The only solution is a divine bridge — that bridge is Christ Jesus. "And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation" 2 Corinthians 5:18.

God created a way by sending His Son to pay the price for our sin. "God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). He died in our place; He who knew no sin became sin for us. This removed our burden of sin and allows us the chance to enter into that desired fellowship if we follow His way.

Is Jesus Christ the only way?

He is the only way! Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6). It is not just enough that you know these truths. We must individually place our trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. It is by repenting of our sins and believing on Christ that we can know God personally and experience His love for ourselves. "But as many as received him, to them gave the power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:" (John 1:12).

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:8-10). "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." (Acts 2:38).

What must I do now?

You may wonder, now that you feel drawn, "What now?" The command for believers, both young and old, is simple:

Repent of your sins and be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ.
Tarry believing that you will receive the Holy Spirit.
Pray to Jesus to strengthen your faith and increase your love toward Him.
Study the word of God and learn the way of Holiness according to the scriptures.

We believe that the Bible is the means of written communication from God to man. It communicates God’s will, plan, and purpose for the human family. The words were inspired by Him. Therefore we must act and live according to what has been laid down in the Holy Scriptures. From this we have obtained the basis of our doctrine and beliefs.

The Holy Bible

The Holy Bible is the word of God. It records the creation of the world and explains where the earth and humans came from (Genesis 1:1; Genesis 1:27). Man (the human race) was created in the image and likeness of God to obey Him and keep his commandments, according to the outline of the scriptures (Ecclesiastes 12:13, 2 Timothy 3:16).

Sin

The first time man disobeyed God was in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:17 – “the day you eatest thereof thou shalt surely die”). From the sin of Adam the whole world has been guilty of sin until now (Romans 3:23). We have become accustomed to death as the loss of natural life, but there is a greater death to consider: eternal damnation, the true penalty of sin (Romans 6:23).

Apostles' Doctrine

God throughout the ages has spoken to his people in general through mouthpieces known as prophets (Hebrews 1:1). They would relay and enforce the plans and actions of God regardless of how the people felt. The prophets’ objective was to please God, not man. Jesus Christ came to redeem the whole world and not just a nation. Therefore He instructed the Apostles in all things concerning his laws, the people, and conduct. Our doctrine, which is that of the Apostles, reflects this experience. "And they continued steadfastly in the Apostles' Doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayer" (Acts 2:42).

God's Standard of Salvation

Since the fall of man God has had a plan of deliverance for the human family. It is because of his plan that we earnestly contend for the faith. Throughout the scriptures God has given the people a clear and precise path to follow. This is still required by God today if we are to receive true salvation. For to just have a bit of Christ in our life now and still hear “Depart from me” (Matthew 7:21–23) is not true salvation.

The act of salvation must be done in line with the method stated in the Scriptures. This must be obtained through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. He became the sacrifice to redeem man from sin. His blood has removed all sin. Therefore we must repent, be baptised and receive the Holy Ghost and walk in the statutes of God: Mark 16:15–17; Acts 1:18; Acts 9:17–18; Acts 10:44–48; Acts 19:1–6, 1 Peter 1:15–16.

Baptism

There has been much controversy about baptising in the name of Jesus Christ. People talk and dispute against baptizing in the name. They say and do many things contrary to that name because they have not been given an explanation of why we baptise in the name of Jesus Christ only, and not in the formula Father, Son and Holy Ghost, as is commonly done by other ministers throughout the religious world. We propose in this section to show three reasons why we baptise in the name of Jesus Christ.

1st Reason – This is what the apostles did. Acts 2:38; Acts 19:1–6. Jesus Christ instructed His apostles. Therefore the apostles’ teachings and doctrines are the fundamental principles upon which the church is built. Jesus, in the days of His flesh, taught His disciples the plan of salvation, opening their understanding and making them to know the mysteries of the Kingdom. In Luke 24:46–47 Jesus Christ said to his disciples, “Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day. And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached IN HIS NAME among all nations beginning at Jerusalem.” Thus the apostles, in obedience to the command of Jesus, became the originators of baptizing in the name of Jesus Christ. Baptizing in the name of Jesus Christ is obeying the Word of God. When we search the Scriptures, we will see that no one was physically baptised in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. The apostles administered baptism in the name of Jesus Christ only.

2nd Reason – We do not believe that the three commissions contradict each other, Matthew 28:19; Luke 24:45–48; Mark 16:15–19. We hold that there is no discrepancy in God’s Word; therefore, we believe that the three commissions all mean the same thing and are fulfilled in Acts 2:38 where Peter said “Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins”.

3rd Reason – To put on Christ, we must be baptised into His death and burial (Romans 6:3–6; John 3:5). We identify ourselves with Christ in His death (conversion), burial (baptism of water) and resurrection (baptism of the Holy Ghost). Romans 6:3–6 reads, “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection”. Sprinkling was never practised by the apostles and has no foundation in the Holy Scriptures. Jesus said, “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” John 3:5. To be born of something, one must first be conceived within it; that which is conceived is covered or hidden. Therefore, to be born of water, one must first be immersed in water and then brought forth from it.

General Assembly By-Laws are a set of rules and regulations that are set forth in accordance with the word of God. The purpose of the By-laws is to ensure that the children of God remain steadfast within the boundaries of the Holy Scriptures. The purpose is to elevate the people leaning on their own understanding and go about to establish their own righteousness. As it is written to let all things be done decently and in order, so it is with the by-laws. As these rules are made in accordance with the Scriptures, they are not allowed to contradict the doctrine of God in any form, but to uphold all that is holy.

I will use no tobacco, or drugs of any sort for smoking, chewing, injecting or any of its habitual forms. [2 Corinthians 7:1; 1 Corinthians 3:16–17; 2 Corinthians 6:16–18; 1 Corinthians 6:19–20; Isaiah 55:2]
I will never be intoxicated with wine or by any type of strong drink. [1 Corinthians 6:10; Ephesians 5:15; Proverbs 20:1]
I, as a woman, will wear no sleeveless dress outside my house, low cut blouses, trousers, split tail skirts/dresses of any kind. The Godhead

We hold to the truth that Jesus Christ is the Almighty God and without Him there is no saviour: Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23; Genesis 1:1; Colossians 1:14–17; Isaiah 45:15–21; Titus 2:13; Deuteronomy 32:4; 1 Corinthians 10:4; Colossians 2:9; 1 John 5:20; Revelation 1:8. The Holy Bible teaches us that there is only one God, not three distinct persons in the Godhead. (Colossians 2:9). Throughout the Bible there is a clear message that God is one (Deuteronomy 6:4). The Holy Ghost is the way in which God dwells in men and women since Pentecost (Acts 2:4), and continues to this day. Therefore, we hold to the word that there is but one God with three functions (1 John 5:7–8). God made flesh (John 1:1–14); God manifested in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16); He which was, which is, and which is to come, the Almighty (Revelation 1:8); the mighty God, everlasting Father, and the Prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6).

Father

God is known as the Father because He created the world. God is also a spirit (John 4:24). He is from everlasting to everlasting. (Psalm 90:2; Ephesians 4:6; Isaiah 43:10; Isaiah 44:6; Revelation 22:13).

Son

For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). This Son is Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:21–23). He came to earth in a body of flesh and blood (Hebrews 10:5) in order to save us. Isaiah prophesied that Jesus Christ is the mighty God (Isaiah 9:6). Jesus Christ is God in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16; John 1:10; John 1:14; 2 Corinthians 5:19). The Jews tried to kill Jesus because He declared Himself equal with God (John 10:24–33). Philip, one of Jesus’ disciples, did not understand that Jesus is the Father as well as the Son (John 14:8–9).

Holy Ghost

The Holy Ghost is an essential part of a Christian’s life, without it we are none of His (Romans 8:9–11). The Holy Ghost is God dwelling in man; it guides us, without force, to follow Christ. With the Spirit of God in our lives, we grow and develop into the true children of the Most High God as we follow the written Word of God.

Moral Standard for the Saints of God

As children of God, we ought to recognise that we are special and no longer the same as everyone else (1 Peter 2:9; 2 Corinthians 5:17). Our bodies were created to glorify and honour God. In fact, our bodies are the temples of the Holy Ghost (Romans 12:1–2; 1 Corinthians 6:19–20). Those who walk in the Spirit do not fulfil the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). The works of the flesh are the things that people often feel that they get the most pleasure from but in actual fact are wrong in the sight of God. Many works of the flesh that do not glorify God are identified in several passages of Scripture (Romans 1:24; 1 Corinthians 6:9–10; Galatians 5:19–21; Revelation 21:8).

Some of the works of the flesh mentioned in Scripture include sodomy, adultery, evil attitudes, evil communications, murder, drunkenness, stealing, and witchcraft. The liberty we have in Christ should not become an occasion to fall back under the power of Satan (John 8:32,36; Romans 6:14; Romans 8:2). We are not to become again entangled in the yoke of bondage (Galatians 5:1). In light of this God given liberty, it is imperative that the saints refrain and abstain from all alcoholic beverages and any habit forming or mood-altering substances. Any such materials are prohibited for the saints of God. These vices are out of character and do not promote a positive moral ethic for those who are sanctified. Saints must never participate in activities such as gambling including lotteries, raffles, bingo and such like. These things will corrupt the temple of God and bound a person that the Spirit had once made free (Isaiah 28:7; James 1:21).

Throughout the scriptures we see that God has worked in a special way by the act of healing. What made this special was the act was done out of the ordinary. The Scriptures foretold that God would come and perform miracles for His people (Isaiah 35:5). This was fulfilled through our Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament as He was preaching the gospel of the kingdom. (Matthew 4:23–24). The Lord then instructed his disciples to heal those who were sick, cleanse the leper, and raise the dead. (Matthew 10:7–8) Jesus said concerning those who believe the gospel having the Holy Spirit, "They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover" (Mark 16:17–18). As the disciples established the gospel they performed healing and miracles through Jesus Christ. We also have been left with the access to all the blessings and the ability to heal through Jesus Christ (James 5:14–16). No man has this power but man can perform the act through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Colossians 3:17).

Offerings

We believe in the Apostles' principle and custom of financing the Church by means of Tithes and Offerings. A tithe is one-tenth of one's earnings and an offering is what is given of free will in honour and sacrifice to God above one's tithes. Offerings may be received by the Minister and workers in the field, wherever and whenever given without begging (Malachi 3:8–10; Matthew 23:23; Hebrews 7:5–10).

We firmly hold that socials, such as concerts, and shows, are not God's plan for carrying on His work. Programmes involving choirs and groups that charge entrance fees at the Church door are traditions of men and not of God.

The Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper was instituted by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Its purpose is to remember the sacrifice made for us by Jesus Christ, which cleanses us from sin (Matthew 26:26–27; Mark 14:22–25; Luke 22:19–20; 1 Corinthians 11:25). The conduct of Lord’s Supper is laid down for us in the scripture using bread and wine. The bread represents the body of Jesus Christ, and the wine represents His blood (Matthew 26:26). In order for the Lord’s Supper to be administered correctly, the wine must be served from one cup (Matthew 26:27; 1 Corinthians 11:25; Mark 14:23) symbolising the unity of the church and reflecting the oneness of the Godhead. The bread is served first, followed by the wine (1 Corinthians 11:23–25).

Feet Washing

The Lord’s Supper is not complete without the washing of feet. We learn that the washing of feet follows the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper John 13:2 states, “And supper being ended...” Jesus Christ teaches us that, without the washing of feet, we are not following Him (John 13:8). Jesus Christ instituted this practice (John 13:4–5 ) and taught us to follow His example by washing one another’s feet (John 13:14).

Government

All magistrates are ordained of God for peace, safety and the general welfare of all people: Romans 13:1–10. Therefore, it is our duty to obey all laws of the land that do not contradict biblical principles. It is our duty to honour them and show respect in all lawful requirements of the Government.

Marriage and Divorce

Anyone who divorces his or her wife or husband, and remarries someone else, with his or her first spouse still alive has committed adultery. At the same time whosoever marries a divorcee is committing adultery (Luke 16:18; Romans 7:1–3; 1 Corinthians 7:39; Mark 10:11–12). Circumstances and opinions don’t come into it, the Word of God tells us plainly right from wrong.

Resurrection and Translation of the Saints

The scriptures tell us time is near for the coming of the Lord. The dead in Christ shall rise first and those that remain shall be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. (1 Thessalonians 4:13–17; Matthew 24:36–42 ) The unrighteous and the wicked dead shall not rise, until the thousand years have expired, which shall be the White Throne of Judgement. " And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." (Revelation 20:15). After Christ has come for his saints in the translation and after the tribulation period, He shall return with them and reign on earth for a thousand years. There shall be peace on earth and good-will toward men, after which, the Second Resurrection and the White Throne Judgement shall take place. "Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years" (Revelation 20:6).

The Millennium

We believe that the distress upon earth is the “ beginning of sorrows” and will become more intense until there “shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time” (Matthew 24:3–8; Daniel 12:1). The period of “tribulation” will be followed by the dawn of a better day on earth. For one thousand years there will be peace on earth and good will towards men (Revelation 20:15; Isaiah 65:17–25; Matthew 5:5; Daniel 7:27; Micah 4:1–2; Hebrews 2:14; Romans 11:25–27).

Final Judgement

Once the thousand years are fulfilled, there shall be a resurrection of the dead, small and great regardless of where their remains lie. All shall stand before the Great White Throne for their final judgement. All of those, whose names are not found in the book of life, shall be cast into the lake of fire, burning with fire and brimstone. This is the second death that God has prepared for the devil and his angels and all who did not serve the Lord. Satan will be cast in first (Revelation 20:7–15; Matthew 25:41–46; Revelation 21:8).

The Apostles taught and practised the standards of salvation that the Lord had given them through his direct teachings and through the Holy Ghost, the words that we now hold fast the word of God. We are instructed to "earnestly contend for the faith that was once delivered unto the saints”. We endeavour to comply with what the Apostles left on record in order to instruct and lead the people of God.

As man has tried to go before God and do what they think is best they have erred and as a result watered down the Standard of Salvation and ignored the word and principles. Therefore it is imperative that we maintain God’s standards and expose those that would pervert that doctrine and lead people in to captivity.

God had only one way for Israel, and all had to observe this way and do as Moses had commanded them. Hence, we must observe and do all that was commanded to us by the Lord Jesus through the Apostles. God has required of us but one way. He has also given us an example of what we must do: "Except a man be born of the water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God" (St. John 3:5). Men and women alike must receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, speaking in other tongues, according to Acts 2:4.

Therefore it is our earnest desire to follow the word of God as outlined in the scriptures, as the word of God said, “He that believeth on me as the scripture says out of his belly shall follow rivers of living water”. Every word of God is right and true.
